Honors Advanced Art has been discussing the idea of storytelling through the visual arts. Students created narrative portraits, through which they told a story about a person. We just recently finishing critiquing the works in class. This led to a lot of wonderful discussion regarding the role of art and how artists use visual works to tell certain stories about people and events. Above: Finished Narrative Portraits and students working hard during our critique.

Honors Advanced Art students were working with oil pastels and focusing on mixing skin tones of hands and feet while telling an interesting story. They are doing a great job!
This was the third year that Madison High School has partnered with Central Avenue School to bring to life our version of "The Monster Project". Students in 2nd grade at CAS were asked to create a monster from their imagination. Art teacher Jordana Linder had students create their monster using watercolor, oil pastel, ink and marker. She then sent the art to MHS. At the high school the 2nd grader's work was given to either a Painting student or a 3 dimensional design student. Students studied the 2nd grader's work and they found inspiration to create their own interpretation of the monster. The results were wonderful and we took our finished projects over to CAS where the 2nd graders got to meet their high school student and keep the monster that was inspired by their imagination. High School Creative Writing students also wrote a short poem inspired by the monsters. This project is always so fun and reminds us all to celebrate our creative spirits! Below are some images of my Painting students' work!
Many Madison High School students were chosen to be in the highly competitive, juried Blackwell Street student art show. This marked the show's 30th anniversary and the work is displayed at the Atrium Gallery in Morristown until May 3rd. At the opening reception several students won awards in different categories including watercolor, charcoal, oil painting, scratchboard, collage, sculpture and ceramics. I'm so proud of all my students, but especially my honors students who worked so hard and were rewarded with ribbons! Way to go MHS artists!
