Two MHS Seniors have both had their artwork chosen to be included in The Morris Museum’s juried exhibition “Fresh Perspectives”. This exhibit is a highly competitive program for Morris County high school students to showcase their art in a professional manner at The Morris Museum. Only 50 pieces were chosen for this exhibit out of over 400 submissions! Both students are very proud and excited to see their work on display at The Morris Museum. The show will be on view from March 9 - June 3rd at The Morris Museum.

Honors Advanced Art took a field trip this week to The Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC. We took this field trip specifically to see the Michelangelo: Divine Draftsman and Designer exhibit. This exhibit brings together much of Michelangelo's work in one place. It was an impressive exhibit! We went with the advanced Italian students. On the way to the museum, art students helped Italian students learn art vocabulary such as contrapposto and chiaroscuro. Students also had to sketch while in the museum and try to learn from drawing after one of the great Italian Renaissance masters! What an amazing experience!
Critique is an important facet of any art class. Our Honors Advanced Art Studio class participates in many critiques throughout the year. Critique helps us grow and reflect on our success and things we could improve. Although students are sometimes apprehensive about critique, they benefit from it tremendously. This week we critiqued the advanced students' expressive portraits. Using post it notes we gave each other a lot of feedback.
For beginning Art Studio students it is important to learn or review the elements and principles of art and design. Learning these vocabulary terms can help students to critique their own work and the work of others using appropriate art terminology. Students created these abstract charts focusing on the elements and one principle (of their choosing). Students focused on creating strong compositions and using the different elements to create an interesting design.
Check out these amazing pieces by Art Studio students who are learning the techniques of hatching and cross hatching through scratchboard.
Beginning Art Studio students had the challenging task of creating a self-portrait from observation. By looking at their reflection in the mirror, they learned to draw the correct facial proportions as well as practiced shading techniques. This is no easy task for a beginning art student! Students then had to create an interesting patterned background. We looked at many self-portraits from Art History as well as the portraits of contemporary artist Kehinde Wiley. Check out their amazing work in A hall.
