Honors Art students created expressive portraits by using their classmates as models. Each student was given a word that described a particular emotion and had to pose for the artist. We focused on lighting and composition and trying to capture the mood of the model.

Beginning art students in Art Studio classes worked on drawing the human face with correct proportions. We also practiced shading with graphite and looked at the work of Kehinde Wiley and Vincent Van Gogh. We analyzed their portraits and self-portraits and were inspired by their backgrounds. Using a mirror to draw your own face from observation is no easy task, and I think these students did a fantastic job!
Madison High School's advanced art students are participating again this year in The Memory Project. The Memory Project is a non-profit organization that invites art students to create and donate portraits to youth around the world who have faced substantial challenges, such as violence, disasters, extreme poverty, neglect, and loss of parents. The portraits serve to help the children feel valued and important and to act as meaningful pieces of personal history.
The Honors Advanced students have just begun their portraits and are working on correct facial proportions and mixing colors for skin tones. Check out their progress so far! |
